How do you inspire a company of workers that creates 2,000-2,400 new inventions great and small every year? More money? More incentives? Sure those things work temporarily but what about our work environment?
Have you ever gone to your job, looked around and been generally depressed by what you see? If you worked at Inventionland you would be hard pressed to frown every day you went to work. The office itself virtually bleeds upbeat theming. From pirate ships to tree-houses, the employees of Inventionland spend their office time submerged in creative theming. Ever imagined sitting down to your workstation inside a cave or under a waterfall? Have you ever wanted to have a meeting inside at castle at a “round table”? If you worked at Inventionland you would.
The creative mind behind this 61,000 square foot, themed office and company in Pittsburgh, Pa is George Davison. In a moment of creative genius, Davison disregarded those who criticised his unconventional methods and decided to change the work environment to foster creativity of his fellow worker. Based on the figures since the change, his methods are a win for himself and the company.
While this is not a model that has been picked up by many companies it is a firm example of the way that both internal and external theming of an environment can foster creativity and happiness in a workplace. After all, who wouldn’t be happy with their office under a placid waterfall. Our only concern at the Behind the Themes office is how many bathroom breaks would you need listening to that all day.
In any case we would like to see more theming like this in work environments. Thanks Inventionland for setting the bar a little higher for us all.
