It is with great sadness that we say farewell to a living legend Sir Christopher Lee. With a voice that booms and commands attention and a stature that towered over most anyone close to him Christopher Lee was a true icon in film, literature and music for many.
With a surprisingly diverse career, the 93 year old World War II Veteran passed away this week after being hospitalised for respiratory problems and heart failure. With an amazing career behind him, Lee never retired from acting but went on to add both writing novels and recording Metal albums (including a death metal Christmas album). Though he tended to stay away from horror films later in life, he was scheduled to begin shooting one in late 2015.
On a personal note, I have met a few quite famous people in my line of work and meeting Mr Lee was the first and only time I recall being start struck. I stammered over my words as this kind but intense eyed man towered over me, raised a hand and simply said, “It’s OK son, take a breath and start again.” It was clear he understood his effect on others and handled it with style and grace.
For those uninitiated into Mr Lee’s catalog of work, he started in classic Hammer horror films which defined both genre and generations and went on to plat iconic roles for Time Burton (see Sleepy Hallow, Corpse Bride, etc), George Luca (see Count Dooku – Star Wars) and Peter Jackson (see Lord of the Rings trilogy).
With a stare that can truly (first hand knowledge) make you shiver and feel very , very small small and a warm and lively smile, Mr Lee was truly a unique and beloved character and man. At age 93 he represented something we should all strive for and will be missed around the world. The film world will never be the same having lost another giant legend in both stature and presence.
